and welcome to the Barniken House Hotel website, we hope it will inspire you to visit us.
The Barniken is situated in Duns, the county town of Berwickshire, which is amalgamated into what is now the Scottish Borders. The whole area is a special place to visit, full of old world charm, very relaxing and endowed with wonderful unspoilt scenery.

The Barniken specialises in golfing breaks, and has a special arrangement with Duns Golf Club, ( which you can access via the Links connection.) There are many other courses close at hand, and it is no problem for us to book tee times for you at either Coldstream or Eyemouth which near at hand, and also have Links. We do packages for individual needs for either three or six night breaks.

Please contact me at barniken@tiscali.co.uk if you want further information or to check availability.

The area is wonderful walking country and has several designated walks. Drop offs and pick-ups can be arranged from the hotel if you wish to walk part of the Southern upland Way, or even St .Cuthbert.’s Way. The Cheviots, and the northern end of the Pennine Way are just over the border at Yetholm.

The area is also rich in history as it was one of the main battle areas when England and Scotland were at odds. Flodden Field is close by though over the border. Further details are given later in the site.

Peaceful Sea, River and Loch fishing are easily accessible in the area, more details can be found on the fishing page.

The Barniken is a pet friendly hotel and dogs are allowed to bring owners with them.

The Barniken itself is a listed (c1810) Georgian building situated at the end of a quiet cul de sac not far from the centre of the town. Handy for town but, good for a quiet nights sleep. We have our own private parking to the front of the hotel and a sunny well furnished beer garden to the rear, where there is a swing and see-saw, nine hole putting green, rabbits, guinea pigs, cockatiels and finches to keep young and old alike amused.

We have a cosy lounge bar and specialise in malt whiskies, 105, in all.
Our homecooked meals are served in either the bar or our non-smoking dining-room

Berwickshire is one of Scotland’s smallest counties, its capital was Berwick upon Tweed, until after changing hands several times, it finally ended up in England and Duns became the county town, after Greenlaw hadfulfilled that purpose for a while. Other towns in the county are Coldstream, home of the guards, and Eyemouth on the coast, famous for its fishing disaster of 1881.

Duns is well situated for easy access to the East coast, for visiting the Farne Islands and the John Muir Country Park at Dunbar, plus the coastal villages of St. Abbs, Coldingham and Burmouth. The sea off this coast is the clearest in the country and popular with divers. Edinburgh, which is full of inerest, is only an hours drive away over the Lammermuir hills.
